A guide to Zoom for the yarn industry

Fay Dashper-Hughes

The current pandemic means that more of my industry peers are looking at providing online options for craft groups, yarn shows, gatherings etc.

I have been using Zoom for well over two years and I think it's a fab option for people to try.

Given that I have some knowledge in setting up online groups and managing them during Zoom sessions, I thought it would be helpful to share what I know so that can speed up the learning curve for my fellow yarnies and help keep our small businesses afloat.

To that end, I have pulled together a quick presentation with clickable links and screenshots for visual reference.   Just click on the image below or here.

Some additional things that were mentioned in the first training session:

You can use www.bookwhen.com for booking in training/workshop sessions.  By using a different access code for each session you should only have paid customers joining you.

YouTube seems to be glitching at the moment, but you can stream directly from Zoom to YouTube - take a look here for Zoom info on that.

I also said I would cut and paste my Rules of Engagement for Global Hook Ups in case anyone wanted to recycle them:

1 - The Global Hook Ups and The Crochet Circle audio and video podcast are for those that love fibre crafts, particularly crochet. It’s a community for people that like to support their fellow humans regardless of race, gender, sexuality, ability, size or age. I hope you feel the welcome embrace and love of the Crochet Clan. Needless to say, if you attend a Global Hook Up and cannot treat your fellow humans with respect, I will remove you from the session

2 - You are all muted until I unmute you at the beginning of the session.

3 - If you are in a really noisy environment and it impacts on the audio for the session then I am afraid I will have to mute you throughout the session.

4 - You are very welcome to join the session and keep yourself muted (it is not a requirement that you talk).

5 - You are very welcome to join the session and pop a post-it note on your camera (it is not a requirement that you appear on screen).

I genuinely hope this quick guide helps people to quickly get to grips with Zoom and that more online content helps to save your businesses.
